Letter from the Don Bend (World War II)
Letter from József Bányai sergeant to his mother on January 12, 1944, when Soviet troops attacked the Don River (excerpt):
“It’s wickedly cold. I’m sitting next to my machine gun and my hands are freezing on the empty chick. I know that by the time you get this card, I won’t freeze and my hunger will pass. Here we die. Please don’t be angry with me!
Kiss your hand:
Your Faithful Son: Jóska ”
